Grass Fire Quickly Extinguished on Interstate 29 Near Brookings

Northeast Radio SD News – Brookings County, SD - Multiple local agencies responded to a roadside grass fire along Interstate 29. The incident occurred near mile marker 129 in Brookings at 7:46 p.m. on June 18, 2026.


According to a media release from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Department, the responding units included:


·         The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office

·         The Brookings Police Department

·         The Brookings Fire Department


Crews arriving on the scene were able to quickly extinguish the fire. Traffic in the area remained largely unaffected while emergency responders were managing the scene.

Currently, the cause of the fire is unknown. Damage was limited strictly to an area of grass, and an official damage estimate is still pending.
