Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD – As the June 2nd primary election approaches, Senator Steph Sauder emphasizes the importance of voter participation, transparency, and a strong future for South Dakota.
The countdown to the primary election is on, and South Dakota District 4 Senator Steph Sauder is making her final push to connect with voters. In a recent in-depth interview on Northeast Radio SD, the Senator discussed the importance of the upcoming election, her legislative record, and her commitment to the people of South Dakota.
The Importance of Every Vote
Senator Sauder didn’t mince words about the significance of the June 2nd primary. “You’ve got to vote. You really do. That’s your responsibility,” she urged. She highlighted the hard work of local election workers and auditors, praising their dedication and refuting claims of election integrity issues in the state. “Our auditors are rock stars,” she noted, emphasizing the rigorous processes in place to ensure fair and accurate elections. She encouraged those who haven’t already to vote absentee at their local courthouse or head to the polls on Election Day.
Looking Beyond the Scorecards
A major theme of the interview was the proliferation of political “scorecards” from various organizations. Senator Sauder cautioned voters against taking these scorecards at face value, pointing out that they often fail to capture the nuance of the legislative process. She emphasized that a simple “yes” or “no” vote doesn’t tell the whole story.
For example, she addressed her vote against a parental rights bill, explaining that she felt it was unnecessary because the 14th Amendment already protects those rights. She was concerned about the influence of out-of-state lawyers and the potential for frivolous lawsuits. “I want my grandson to stay here... I want them to stay here because there’s opportunities for them here,” she explained, highlighting her focus on the long-term impact of legislation.
Defending Agriculture and Free Markets
Senator Sauder also discussed her vote against a bill that would have banned “fake meat” products. While some might assume a South Dakota legislator would support such a ban, she explained her reasoning: “The cattlemen were okay with us voting against it... they said it’s not that we oppose agriculture, it’s we recognize something critically important for the future of farming and ranching: creating a state-level ban on federally approved products sets a dangerous precedent that could be used against traditional agriculture.” She championed the free market, arguing that consumers should have the choice and that the quality of traditional South Dakota meat will always win out.
A Commitment to Teamwork and the Future
Throughout the interview, Senator Sauder emphasized her collaborative approach to governance. “I get to belong to a team,” she said, expressing her pride in working with her fellow legislators, agencies, and the executive and judicial branches to solve problems. “We all have to put these puzzle pieces together.”
Her vision for District 4 is one of growth, opportunity, and a strong sense of community. She spoke passionately about ensuring a bright future for the next generation, so that young people have the opportunity to stay in South Dakota, farm, work, and raise their families.
