Investigation Underway Following Fatal Crash on South Dakota Highway 44

Northeast Radio SD News - South Dakota - A single-vehicle crash late Wednesday night on South Dakota Highway 44 resulted in five fatalities, according to preliminary information from the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, about three miles east of Scenic, near mile marker 90.
The driver of a 2004 Honda Pilot was traveling eastbound when they reportedly failed to negotiate a curve. The vehicle left the roadway, entered the north ditch, and struck a concrete barrier. Following the impact, the vehicle became engulfed in flames.
The driver and four passengers in the vehicle died at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims, pending notification of their family members.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol, an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, is investigating the crash. Officials stated that all details released are preliminary, and additional information will be made available as the investigation progresses.
