Northeast Radio SD News - Pierre, SD - Student leaders from across South Dakota will gain a firsthand look at the state’s lawmaking process on Thursday, Jan. 29, as they participate in “Capitol Conversations,” a flagship civic engagement event for the Jobs for America’s Graduates South Dakota (JAG-SD) program.
The event brings students to the State Capitol to engage directly with legislators, lobbyists, and policymakers. Throughout the day, JAG-SD participants will observe committee meetings, discuss topics ranging from judicial systems to educational leadership, and receive formal recognition from the House and Senate floors.
“JAG-SD turns challenges into opportunities for students facing barriers to success,” said Governor Larry Rhoden. “I am pleased to welcome these young leaders to the Capitol and celebrate their strong efforts to achieve their fullest potential.”
JAG-SD is a state-based national non-profit program overseen by the South Dakota Department of Education. It is designed to support students who face various barriers to success—ranging from economic challenges to academic hurdles—by providing a comprehensive set of services aimed at graduation and career readiness.
The program currently operates in 13 school districts across the state, focusing on middle and high school models that emphasize leadership, civic responsibility, and professional development.
“At JAG-SD, we emphasize the importance of civic engagement and leadership, which is why we created Capitol Conversations,” said Beth Schneider, Director of JAG-SD. “This event provides students with an immersive learning opportunity in government that can help them realize the true potential they hold.”
Following the session, students often participate in “Continue the Conversation” activities, reconnecting with leaders in their own communities to discuss the local impact of the laws passed in Pierre.
