Kayak Around Kampeska Returns July 25 in Watertown with Rotary-Led Community Paddle

Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - The Rotary Club of Watertown will host its annual Kayak Around Kampeska community paddle on Saturday, July 25, inviting residents of all skill levels to enjoy a morning on Lake Kampeska while connecting with fellow outdoor enthusiasts. The event runs from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., launching from Stokes Thomas Park.

Participants are asked to arrive by 8 a.m., where Rotarians will welcome kayakers with breakfast, route maps, and volunteer contact numbers. The mapped course includes multiple stops around the lake, each staffed by volunteers to assist paddlers.

A key feature of this year’s event is enhanced on-water safety. According to the release, “Codington County Search & Rescue [will be] on the water in either a boat or jet skis to keep an eye on kayaks.” The team will be positioned to respond immediately in case of emergencies.

Kayakers must bring their own lifejackets, kayaks, and paddles. Only non‑motorized kayaks and paddleboards are permitted.

Volunteer Roles Needed

Rotary is seeking additional volunteers to support the event:

·         Stop Volunteers — Stationed at designated stops to hold flags, guide paddlers, assist with getting in and out of the water, and help launch kayaks back onto the route. The release notes these volunteers “can also assist kayakers with getting out of the water to take a break and help push them back into the water too.”

·         Truck Volunteers — Drivers with trucks who can transport kayaks and participants choosing not to complete the full loop back to Stokes Thomas Park.

Rotary encourages both seasoned kayakers and beginners to participate, emphasizing that even partial volunteering makes a meaningful impact. The event aims to highlight the natural beauty of Lake Kampeska while strengthening community involvement.
