Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - Local student Malia Kranz has achieved a significant milestone in her high school career, having been nominated to the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) by U.S. Senator Mike Rounds. Kranz, a high school senior, discussed the rigorous application process and her plans during a recent interview with Northeast Radio SD.

The nomination is a prerequisite for appointment to the prestigious service academy located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Kranz noted the process included a formal application submitted to the offices of state leadership and an interview with a selection board.

“I had to go through an interview to actually get it with their board,” Kranz said.

Commitment to Service and Education

Kranz confirmed her deep interest in a military career, explaining that the Air Force Academy functions much like a college, providing an “insane” level of education with a commitment to service attached.

“You do go, it’s a lot like a college. You go, and you study for a degree,” Kranz stated, adding that all cadets receive free tuition, room, and board, which is paid for by a five-year commitment to serve as a commissioned officer in the Air Force following the four years of academy training. Kranz expressed interest in exploring fields such as aviation or medicine while at the Academy.

If the final appointment is received, Kranz is scheduled to report for Basic Training in June of next year, shortly after high school graduation. The final decision on the appointment is anticipated in mid-January.

Local Academic and Athletic Achievements

Kranz’s achievements are not limited to military aspirations. The senior is currently ranked number one in their class academically.

On the athletic field, Kranz has had an equally dominant career. Kranz is a two-time state champion in discus and currently holds the school record in shot put, which was broken by approximately one foot. Kranz credited family support, including her father’s encouragement, for her dedication to the throwing events.

Regarding the Air Force Academy’s required physical fitness and athletics, Kranz intends to continue track and field at the college level, which will be another avenue for representing Watertown on a national stage.
