Northeast Radio SD News – South Dakota - A federal jury in Rapid City has convicted Oliver Brown Bull, 37, of Kyle, South Dakota, of Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury following a three-day trial. The verdict was returned on December 4, 2025, according to an announcement from United States Attorney Ron Parsons.

The conviction stems from an incident on January 31, 2025, on the Pine Ridge Reservation, where Brown Bull assaulted another man. Evidence presented at trial showed that Brown Bull pushed the victim to the ground, punched him multiple times in the face, and then kicked him in the face.

The victim suffered several serious injuries as a result of the assault, including a broken eye socket, a laceration around his eye, two broken bones in his nose, and severe bruising. The press release noted that at the time of the trial, the victim was still experiencing pain and disfigurement from the attack.

A federal grand jury initially indicted Brown Bull in March 2025 on two counts of Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury and one count of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon. At the conclusion of the trial, the jury found him guilty of assaulting one victim but not guilty of assaulting the second victim.

The Major Crimes Act, a federal statute, mandates that certain violent crimes alleged to have occurred in Indian Country be prosecuted in federal court, which is why the U.S. Attorney’s Office charged the matter.

The maximum penalty for Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury is ten years in federal custody, a fine of up to $250,000, and three years of supervised release. Restitution to the victim may also be ordered.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigations Division investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Schroeder prosecuted the case.

A presentence investigation has been ordered, and the court will set Brown Bull’s sentencing date at a later time. In the interim, Brown Bull was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
