Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - The Lake Area Radio Klub will take part in the nationwide ARRL Field Day emergency communications exercise on Saturday, June 27, through Sunday, June 28, at the National Guard Readiness Center, located at 1951 Highway 20 in Watertown.

Field Day is the largest amateur radio event in North America, held annually since 1933. During the exercise, ham radio operators set up temporary stations in public locations to demonstrate how amateur radio can provide reliable communication during emergencies, severe weather, or infrastructure failures.

The public is invited to visit the Watertown Field Day site from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 27.

According to the club, Field Day highlights how amateur radio can operate independently of the internet, cell towers, or commercial power, making it a valuable tool during disasters. Operators can connect equipment to laptops or smartphones and establish communication networks from almost any location within minutes.

More than 750,000 licensed amateur radio operators live in the United States, with participants ranging in age from children to seniors. The Lake Area Radio Klub says anyone interested in learning the hobby or becoming licensed can get involved locally.
