Measles Case Confirmed in Edmunds County; South Dakota Health Officials Issue Advisory for Northeast SD

Northeast Radio SD News – Edmunds County, SD - The South Dakota Department of Health (SD‑DOH) has confirmed a case of measles in a child from Edmunds County, prompting a regional advisory to medical providers across northeast South Dakota.
The agency says its statewide measles dashboard will be updated Wednesday to reflect the new case. It currently reports 10 in total, with 6 in Grant County, 1 in Brown, and in Brookings.
Advisory Issued for Eight Counties
The Health Alert Network (HAN) notice applies to providers in Brown, Campbell, Edmunds, Faulk, McPherson, Potter, Spink, and Walworth counties, urging heightened awareness for patients who may have been exposed or who present with symptoms consistent with measles.
According to SD‑DOH, symptoms may include fever, cough, runny nose, or red, watery eyes.
Measles is classified as a Category I reportable disease, meaning providers must report suspected cases to the Department of Health immediately upon suspicion.
Consultation Available for Healthcare Providers
SD‑DOH staff are available to assist clinicians with questions regarding potential measles exposure or symptom evaluation. Providers can call the department’s consultation line at 800‑592‑1861.
