Mitchell and Sioux Falls Residents Identified in Fatal Douglas County Crash

Northeast Radio SD News – Corsica, SD - Authorities have released the names of the individuals involved in a fatal single-vehicle rollover that occurred Sunday evening in Douglas County.
According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, the crash took place at approximately 5:57 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, on SD Highway 44, about six miles southwest of Corsica.
Preliminary investigators report that Carey Jay Utterback, 52, of Mitchell, was driving a 2016 Ford Fusion eastbound near mile marker 325 when the vehicle left the roadway and entered the south ditch. The vehicle struck a field approach and vaulted over a fence before rolling and coming to a rest in a field.
Utterback and one passenger, Peggy Lynn Iverson, 72, of Sioux Falls, sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other passengers in the vehicle, Bethanie Lynn Iverson, 37, and Benjamin Lyle Iverson, 36, both of Sioux Falls, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Both were life-flighted to a Sioux Falls hospital for medical treatment.
The Highway Patrol noted that while the driver was wearing a seat belt, neither Bethanie nor Benjamin Iverson was wearing theirs at the time of the accident. The seat belt use of Peggy Iverson remains under investigation.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash. All information released at this time is considered preliminary.
