Name Released in Lake County Fatal Crash

South Dakota Highway Patrol Investigates Fatal Crash; Shattered Windshield Highlights Tragic Incident.

Northeast Radio SD News – Lake County, SD - Authorities have released the name of the man killed in a single‑vehicle crash earlier this month, southwest of Madison.


The South Dakota Department of Public Safety says 66‑year‑old David James Hanson of Nunda died in the April 14 crash at the intersection of 451st Avenue and Pelican Point Road, about three miles southwest of Madison.


According to preliminary information, Hanson was driving a 2010 Lincoln MKX westbound across 451st Avenue when the vehicle left the roadway and entered a grass field. The SUV struck a tree stump and overturned.


Hanson was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate. All information released so far is preliminary. The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.


Records of state‑reportable crashes will be available at SafeSD.gov once the investigation is complete.
