Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - The future of South Dakota retail isn’t just about what is on the shelves; it’s about the community and innovation behind the counter. In a recent episode of Northeast Radio SD’s “We Believe in Business,” leaders from the South Dakota Retailers Association (SDRA) and local entrepreneurs gathered to discuss the success of the inaugural Next Gen Business Builders cohort.

A New Chapter for Small Business

The Next Gen program was born from a desire to bridge the gap for early-stage entrepreneurs. Brooke Bohnenkamp, Deputy Executive Director of the SDRA, explained that the initiative focuses on professional development and networking for those navigating the critical first years of business ownership.

“We really wanted a way to nurture early-stage business owners and provide them an opportunity to network with others in the same stage of the game,” said Bohnenkamp. The program, which consists of six meetings over a year, has already exceeded expectations, launching with 18 members despite an initial goal of 12.

From Products to Experiences

Among those leading the charge is Lisa Converse, owner of Element in Watertown. Converse, who has been self-employed for 30 years, highlighted a significant shift in consumer behavior. Her business has pivoted toward a “micro-event” and experience-based model, focusing on high-quality charcuterie and intimate gatherings.

“People really are about the experience lately, and not so much about things,” Converse noted. She also emphasized the evolving challenge of marketing, noting the jump from phone books to TikTok over her three-decade career. Her advice to those hesitating to start? “Growth comes from being uncomfortable. Take that leap.”

Overcoming the “Back End” Hurdle

For many new owners, the passion for their product is often met with the daunting reality of business administration. Bailey Meyer, of Northern Edge Marketing in Webster, serves clients across the Midwest but finds immense value in the SDRA’s local support system.

“It’s the back end that ties us down—taxes, legislation, the things we aren’t always ‘into,’” Meyer shared. “Having access to people who know what is going on and where to find information is invaluable.” Meyer encourages aspiring owners to stop waiting for perfect self-confidence and to “do it,” leaning on the community for support.

Looking Ahead

As the first cohort progresses through deep dives into AI, HR, and marketing, the SDRA is already looking ahead.

·         Applications for the next cohort: Expected to open in September 2026.

·         Program Structure: A mix of in-person and virtual sessions designed to be accessible without being a burden on busy schedules.
