Northeast Radio SD News – Gary, SD - Rapid response and high-tech monitoring are being credited for the quick containment of a brush fire west of Gary on Saturday afternoon.
According to the Deuel County Sheriff’s Office, the Gary Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 1:00 p.m. on March 28, 2026, to a reported fire burning in a rural area west of the community.
In a unique turn of events, the fire was not initially reported by a passerby or resident. Instead, the National Weather Service (NWS) detected the blaze utilizing advanced monitoring technology. This high-tech “eye in the sky” allowed emergency services to be notified and dispatched before any traditional 911 calls were made from the scene.

The early warning allowed local crews to mobilize immediately. The following agencies responded to the call:
· Gary Fire Department
· Clear Lake Fire Department
· Deuel County Sheriff’s Office
Officials noted that the coordinated efforts between the departments ensured the fire was addressed both quickly and effectively, preventing it from spreading further into the surrounding landscape.
No injuries or property damage have been reported at this time.
