October Sobriety Checkpoints Planned Across 20 South Dakota Counties

Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - The South Dakota Highway Patrol will conduct sobriety checkpoints in 20 counties throughout the month of October, according to a release from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

Checkpoints are scheduled in the following counties: Beadle, Bennett, Brookings, Brown, Charles Mix, Clay, Codington, Davison, Day, Jackson, Lake, Lincoln, Lyman, Meade, Moody, Pennington, Spink, Stanley, Walworth, and Yankton.

The Highway Patrol says the enforcement effort is intended to reduce impaired driving and improve roadway safety. The checkpoints are funded by the South Dakota Office of Highway Safety and will be carried out in coordination with local law enforcement agencies.

Officials are reminding motorists to make responsible choices and avoid driving after consuming alcohol, whether or not a checkpoint is planned in their area. Drivers who expect to drink are encouraged to designate a sober driver or use public or commercial transportation.

Both the Office of Highway Safety and the Highway Patrol operate under the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
