Northeast Radio SD News – Brookings, SD - A Friday night high school soccer match in South Dakota ended in controversy after Rapid City Central player Jaxson Bergman launched an attack on Brookings High School opponent Kyle Soost, triggering nationwide attention, outrage, and calls for criminal charges.
The incident occurred just before halftime in the boys’ varsity matchup between Rapid City Central High School and Brookings High School. As Bergman and Soost battled for possession along the sideline, Soost pulled ahead to gain control of the ball. Instead of continuing play, Bergman shoved Soost to the ground from behind.
While Soost lay defenseless on the turf, Bergman escalated the assault, kicking Soost in the back of the head before striking him with five punches to the head. The incident prompted Brookings player Caylon Peters to step in, throwing punches at Bergman to pull him off his teammate before coaches and officials rushed in to separate the players.
Bergman was escorted off the field by a coach and did not return to the game. According to South Dakota preps reporter Matt Kerney, who posted video of the altercation to X (formerly Twitter), the match was halted for approximately 10 minutes while officials restored order before play resumed.
The video quickly went viral over the weekend, drawing angry reactions online as viewers called for severe legal and athletic consequences.
“Banned for life and get the police involved,” one user wrote. “This kid needs time in a box to think about his life.”
“That kid in the white jersey should not ever play at his school again,” another commenter posted.
As of Sunday, neither the school district nor the South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA) has publicly announced formal disciplinary actions, status updates regarding Soost’s condition, or whether local law enforcement will pursue charges.
