Rapid City Man Arrested After High-Speed Pursuit From Box Elder Into Wyoming

Northeast Radio SD News – Pennington County, SD - A Rapid City man was taken into custody Friday morning after a pursuit involving the South Dakota Highway Patrol and multiple law enforcement agencies in Box Elder and the surrounding area.

According to preliminary information from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, the incident began when Pennington County dispatch received a report of a theft at Love’s Truck Stop in Box Elder. The driver of a 2019 Toyota Tundra left the scene, and the Box Elder Police Department located the vehicle traveling east on Interstate 90 near mile marker 67.

Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver failed to stop, initiating a pursuit. The South Dakota Highway Patrol joined the chase, which continued onto Highway 14/16 and nearby rural roads before turning westbound on I‑90.

After crossing into Wyoming, the Tundra entered a spin and ran off the roadway. As the driver attempted to regain control, a Highway Patrol unit pinned the vehicle against a tree. The 50‑year‑old male driver from Rapid City was taken into custody without further incident. He was not injured. Authorities say he was not wearing a seat belt.

Agencies assisting included the Box Elder Police Department, Meade County Police Department, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Cook County Sheriff’s Office, and the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
