Northeast Radio SD News – Day County, SD - Authorities have released the names of those involved in a pedestrian crash that killed a Rochester, Minnesota man west of Pierpont.
The South Dakota Department of Public Safety says 51‑year‑old Timothy Allen Smith of Rochester died in the July 15 crash at 130th Street and 412th Avenue, about seven miles west of Pierpont. The crash was reported at 10:43 p.m. Wednesday.
According to preliminary information, Smith and 53‑year‑old Kimberly McDeid of Bath were traveling westbound earlier in the evening in a 2026 Kia when they struck a deer. The pair later returned to the scene in a 1998 Honda CR‑V, parking the vehicle in the westbound lane facing east with the headlights on.
As the pedestrians stood near the Honda, 21‑year‑old Simon Lee Pies of Summit approached westbound in a 2021 International MV607 commercial truck. Pies attempted to avoid the parked vehicle but struck Smith, who was standing in the roadway, before colliding with the Honda.
Smith sustained fatal injuries. Pies and McDeid were not hurt. Pies was wearing a seat belt.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. All information released so far is preliminary.
Records of state‑reportable crashes will be available at SafeSD.gov once the investigation is complete.
