Northeast Radio SD News – Day County, SD - A Rochester, Minnesota man died Wednesday night in a single‑vehicle pedestrian crash west of Pierpont, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
The crash happened at 10:43 p.m. on July 15 at the intersection of 130th Street and 412th Avenue, about seven miles west of Pierpont.
Authorities say two pedestrians — a 51‑year‑old man from Rochester and a 53‑year‑old woman from Bath — had been traveling westbound earlier in the evening in a 2026 Kia when they struck a deer. The pair later returned to the scene in a 1998 Honda CR‑V, parking the vehicle in the westbound lane facing east with the headlights on.
As the pedestrians stood near the Honda, a 2021 International MV607 commercial truck approached westbound on 130th Street. The driver, a 21‑year‑old man from Summit, attempted to avoid the parked vehicle but struck the male pedestrian before colliding with the Honda.
The 51‑year‑old male pedestrian sustained fatal injuries. The truck driver and the second pedestrian were not hurt. The truck driver was wearing a seat belt.
Names of those involved are being withheld pending family notification.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. All information released so far is preliminary.
Records of state‑reportable crashes will be available at SafeSD.gov once the investigation is complete.
