Sanford Watertown Cancer Center Adds Advanced Radiation Technology to Improve Local Cancer Treatment in Watertown, SD

Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - Cancer patients in the Watertown region now have access to faster treatment times and improved precision thanks to new radiation technology installed at the Sanford Watertown Cancer Center.
The center has begun using a new linear accelerator (LINAC), a device that delivers high‑energy electrons directly to a tumor with greater accuracy. The upgraded system shapes radiation beams to match the exact size and contour of the tumor, allowing oncologists to target cancer cells while limiting exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. Because less healthy tissue receives radiation, patients may experience fewer treatment‑related side effects.
“This upgraded equipment and technology are game-changers for patients in our region, as it will help treat cancer more accurately, efficiently and safely,” said John Allen, vice president of operations for the Sanford Health Network. “The investment in advanced technology reflects our commitment to providing world‑class cancer care close to home.”
The new LINAC is housed in an expanded treatment space at the Sanford Watertown Cancer Center.
In addition to the technology upgrade, the center recently transitioned to Epic, Sanford Health’s electronic medical record system. The move connects local patients to the broader Sanford network of clinicians and gives all Sanford Watertown patients easier access to their medical information through MyChart, the system’s patient portal.
Sanford officials say both improvements — the advanced radiation equipment and the electronic record integration — are part of ongoing efforts to expand specialty care options in Watertown and reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for treatment.
