Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - With campaign season underway, the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) is reminding candidates and supporters that political signs are not allowed on state highway rights of way.
Craig Smith, SDDOT Director of Operations, said the department typically sees an increase in illegally placed signs during election cycles.
“This time of year, it is common to find election signs placed along the state’s roadways,” Smith said. “Illegal signs create a safety hazard and may distract motorists from seeing important regulatory or directional signing.”
Under SDCL 31‑28‑14, only official highway signage is permitted within state highway rights of way. Any campaign or ballot‑issue signs placed in these areas will be removed by SDDOT crews when discovered or when reported by the public.
Individuals wishing to reclaim a removed sign may contact their local SDDOT office.
The department also clarified that municipal sign ordinances do not override state jurisdiction. Even within city limits, state highway rights-of-way remain under SDDOT authority.
Additional guidance on proper sign placement is available on the SDDOT website.
SDDOT’s mission is to provide a safe and efficient public transportation system. For road conditions, closures, construction updates, and travel information, visit SD511.org or dial 511.
