Northeast Radio SD News – South Dakota - The South Dakota Department of Social Services (DSS) issued a warning on October 24, 2025, advising residents that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for November 2025 could be delayed or disrupted if the ongoing federal government shutdown continues.
While the DSS confirmed that all October SNAP benefits have been issued, the department noted that future funding is not guaranteed. It is closely monitoring developments with federal partners.
In a public FAQ released Friday, the DSS clarified several key points for recipients and community stakeholders:
· Eligibility Unchanged: SNAP eligibility and program rules have not changed at this time.
· Office Operations: All DSS offices across the state remain fully operational to accept new applications, process renewals, and answer questions.
· Existing Funds: Any current balances remaining on a recipient’s Electronic Benefit
The EBT card (from October or previous months) is still available for use. SNAP-authorized retailers have not been de-authorized.
The DSS also issued a specific caution regarding commodity programs. Federal rules prohibit households from receiving both SNAP and commodities in the same month. This restriction applies even if a Tribe uses its own funds to contribute to or supplement a commodity program, meaning a household’s SNAP eligibility could be impacted if they participate in both.
Community partners and stakeholders are being asked to help prepare for a potential benefits gap in November. The DSS advises stakeholders to promote the careful use of existing benefits and to connect customers with local food banks or pantries.
For recipients seeking help with applications, status checks on benefits, or other local resources, individuals can contact their local DSS office, dial 211, or text their ZIP code to 898211.
