South Dakota Fraternal Order of Police Endorses Governor Larry Rhoden in GOP Gubernatorial Runoff

Northeast Radio SD News – South Dakota - The South Dakota Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), the state’s largest law‑enforcement association, has formally endorsed Governor Larry Rhoden in the Republican gubernatorial runoff, citing what the organization calls “proven results” for public safety and support for officers.

In a statement, the FOP said Rhoden has demonstrated a clear understanding of the daily sacrifices made by law‑enforcement personnel and highlighted several initiatives the organization believes strengthen policing and community safety across South Dakota.

According to the release, Rhoden’s record includes:

·         Operation: Prairie Thunder, a statewide targeted‑patrol effort that the FOP says has produced strong results against crime and drug activity.

·         Adding a full‑time trooper to the Sioux Falls Drug Task Force and authorizing License Plate Readers for local agencies.

·         Securing a new $5 million patrol aircraft to enhance officer safety during operations.

·         Advancing major corrections projects, including a new men’s prison with expanded rehabilitative programming and 96 new drug‑treatment beds at the women’s prison in Rapid City.

·         Implementing parole reforms with additional parole officers, tougher penalties for violators, and new technical‑training programs aimed at reducing recidivism.

·         Partnering with federal authorities through 287(g) agreements, enabling the National Guard and Department of Corrections to assist in deporting illegal‑alien offenders — with more than 600 individuals processed for removal, according to the FOP.

“These are not just promises. These are proven results that support our officers, improve public safety, and make South Dakota a safer place,” the release states.

The South Dakota Fraternal Order of Police represents nearly 1,500 active and retired law‑enforcement officers statewide.

The endorsement was signed by Travis Gutzmer, President of the South Dakota FOP State Lodge.
