Northeast Radio SD News – South Dakota - The South Dakota Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) has officially opened the application window for the E15 Fuel Tax Refund Program, offering local fuel retailers an opportunity to recoup costs from the previous year.
The program, which began accepting applications on Jan. 1, allows licensed marketers to claim a refund of up to 5 cents per gallon for E15 ethanol-blended gasoline sold and dispensed in South Dakota during the 2025 calendar year.
Established to promote the use of homegrown renewable energy, the incentive is part of a multi-year initiative. The refund applies to E15 gallons sold through 2029, providing a consistent financial incentive for retailers to offer higher ethanol blends to South Dakota drivers.
To be eligible for the refund, licensed marketers must meet specific requirements for alternative fuel compatibility. These standards are established and overseen by the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources to ensure the safety of infrastructure and the quality of fuel.
The state’s focus on ethanol remains a key component of its economic strategy. South Dakota is a leading producer of ethanol, and officials view the E15 refund as a “tool to help promote South Dakota’s homegrown energy” while supporting the state’s agricultural backbone.
The application period is brief, with a deadline of Jan. 30, 2026. Retailers are encouraged to submit their materials promptly to ensure they are processed within the 30-day window following the end of the calendar year.
Information regarding the program, including detailed application materials and compatibility standards, is available through the GOED website at sdgoed.com.
