Northeast Radio SD News – South Dakota - The South Dakota Retailers Association (SDRA) has officially launched its 2026 scholarship cycle, continuing a three-decade tradition of investing in the state’s future entrepreneurs, tradespeople, and hospitality leaders.
For over 30 years, the SDRA has provided financial support to students pursuing careers in South Dakota’s business landscape. The program has reached a historic milestone, having awarded more than $270,000 to 285 students since its inception.
Investing in “Strong Business Minds”
The association’s focus remains on fostering local talent that will eventually lead or manage businesses within the state.
“We know our communities are stronger when they have healthy businesses,” said Nathan Sanderson, Executive Director of the SDRA. “Our goal is to help build strong business minds that help build strong business communities.”
Last year alone, the association distributed $16,500 among five recipients. For 2026, individual scholarships start at $2,000.
A Growing Talent Pool
The scholarship committee has noted a significant rise in the quality of applicants in recent years. Chris Verhoek, the Association Board Scholarship Chair and owner of Country Corner in Estelline, expressed optimism about the current generation of students.
“We continue to see an increasing impressive applicant pool,” Verhoek said. “There’s a lot of young talent in South Dakota, and that certainly points to a positive future for the industry.”
