South Dakota Rolls Out New Driver’s License Design With Enhanced Security Features

Northeast Radio SD News – South Dakota - The South Dakota Driver Licensing Program is rolling out a new driver’s license and identification card design this month, introducing updated security features and a modernized layout aimed at improving both protection and usability.

The redesigned cards incorporate advanced security technology, including enhanced printing methods and embedded design elements intended to make the credentials more secure and more difficult to replicate. Officials say the updates are part of ongoing efforts to reduce fraud and identity theft.

“This redesign ensures that South Dakota continues to provide secure, reliable credentials that keep pace with evolving technology,” said Jeannelle Yitagesu, Driver Licensing program manager. “We’re proud that the new cards also highlight the beauty and character of our state.”

Driver License Exam Stations statewide will begin issuing the new cards throughout September, with rollout dates varying by location as each office transitions to the updated system. Residents will automatically receive the new‑style licenses and ID cards during renewal or when applying for new credentials.

Existing licenses will remain valid until their expiration date, and officials emphasize that no immediate action is required from current cardholders.
