Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - State Representative Matt Roby officially announced his candidacy for re-election to the South Dakota House of Representatives, seeking to continue representing District 5.

First elected in 2024, Roby is a Watertown native currently serving his first term in Pierre. He will appear on the Republican primary ballot on June 2, 2026.

In his initial term, Roby focused on legislative initiatives that directly impacted the Watertown region. His efforts included securing funding for equipment at Lake Area Technical College, streamlining regulations, and advocating for local control. Additionally, he worked to enhance campaign finance transparency and raise awareness of the National Marrow Donor Program.

“It has been an honor to serve the Watertown area in the South Dakota House,” Roby said. “I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished during my first term, but there is more work to be done to ensure South Dakota remains a great place to live, work, and raise a family.”

Roby stated that his approach to the legislature is built on collaboration and practical solutions. As he seeks a second term, his platform remains focused on several core pillars: quality and affordable education, responsible economic development, limited government transparency, and the protection of individual liberties.

“I’ve tried to approach this job with humility — listening first, working hard, and seeking constructive outcomes,” Roby said. “I’m running again because steady, thoughtful representation matters.”

A fourth-generation resident of Watertown, the 41-year-old attorney brings a diverse professional background to the House. His resume includes previous service as an Assistant South Dakota Attorney General and as Watertown’s City Attorney. He has also worked in private law practice and the insurance industry. Currently, he serves as Vice President at Hi-Line Capital Management and is an active board member for several local non-profit organizations.

Roby and his wife, Stefanie, are members of Immaculate Conception Church and reside in Watertown with their four children: Bennett, Griffin, Hannah, and Sutton.
