Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - The South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs will host a State Bridge Dedication Ceremony to honor U.S.M.C. Sergeant Dirk R. Abbas on Friday, October 3, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. CT at the Britton Area Event Center, 1203 3rd Street, Britton. The SD HWY-27 bridge over Crow Creek, south of Britton, will be officially designated the SGT Dirk R. Abbas Bridge.
The dedication is part of the Fallen Heroes Bridge Dedication Program, created during the Noem-Rhoden Administration and expanded under Governor Rhoden. In partnership with the South Dakota Departments of Military, Transportation, and Veterans Affairs, the program creates permanent, visible tributes that connect communities to their history and remind future generations of the sacrifices made for freedom.
“It is an honor to recognize the brave men and women who gave their lives for our freedom,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jeremiah Schneider. “The Fallen Hero Bridge Dedication program ensures their sacrifice is remembered every day. These dedications serve as lasting symbols of gratitude and respect, connecting our communities to the legacy of those who served.” Schneider added that the state’s commitment to veterans includes supporting their families and preserving their stories as part of South Dakota’s heritage.
Sergeant Dirk R. Abbas volunteered for the U.S. Marine Corps in February 1951. After completing submarine training at Camp Pendleton, California, he served aboard the U.S.S. Perch before being reassigned to Reconnaissance Company, Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division. Sergeant Abbas deployed to Korea and was killed in action by enemy artillery on October 6, 1952, while his unit conducted a night patrol.
By holding the ceremony in Britton, the state aims to provide a public moment of remembrance for local residents, veterans, and family members. The Department of Veterans Affairs and partner agencies invite the community to attend the dedication and reflect on the service and sacrifice represented by the SGT Dirk R. Abbas Bridge.
