Sturgis Rally Report: South Dakota Highway Patrol Sees More DUI Arrests, Citations and Injury Crashes

Northeast Radio SD News – Sturgis, SD - The South Dakota Highway Patrol has released its daily Sturgis Motorcycle Rally activity report covering the 24‑hour period from 6 a.m. Sunday, August 9, to 6 a.m. Monday, August 10.


The latest numbers show increases in DUI arrests, citations, and warnings compared to the same point last year, along with 11 injury crashes reported across the Sturgis and Rapid City districts.


Troopers recorded 40 DUI arrests, 65 misdemeanor drug arrests, 24 felony drug arrests, and 71 custodial arrests. Patrol activity also included 506 citations and 1,412 warnings, both higher than last year’s totals to date.


Crash data shows six non‑injury crashes, 11 injury crashes, and one fatal crash, though no new fatal crashes occurred during this reporting period.


Injury Crashes

  • 2:29 p.m. — Rapid City (Deadwood Ave N & Tatanka Rd) A 50‑year‑old man operating a 2024 Harley‑Davidson with a 53‑year‑old female passenger collided with a southbound GMC Yukon after failing to yield while turning. Both motorcycle occupants were transported to Monument Health Rapid City with non‑life‑threatening injuries.

  • 6:35 p.m. — SD Highway 79, Mile Marker 61: A 2017 Chevrolet Trax turned in front of a 2001 Jeep Wrangler, resulting in a collision. A 69‑year‑old female passenger in the Jeep received minor injuries.

  • 7:54 p.m. — U.S. Highway 385, Mile Marker 118: A 2016 Harley‑Davidson struck a deer, injuring both the 51‑year‑old driver and his 51‑year‑old passenger. Both were transported to Lead‑Deadwood Monument Health with non‑life‑threatening injuries.

  • 6:03 p.m. — U.S. Highway 16, Mile Marker 39: A 32‑year‑old man on a 1993 Harley‑Davidson collided with a 1972 Pontiac LeMans that failed to yield while crossing the highway. The rider, who was wearing a helmet, was separated from the motorcycle and transported to Monument Health Rapid City with non‑life‑threatening injuries.
