Two Drivers Uninjured After Highway 81 Crash Near Lake Poinsett

Northeast Radio SD News – Hayti, SD - Two drivers escaped without injury after an early morning crash on U.S. Highway 81 on Sunday, according to the Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office.


Emergency responders were dispatched shortly after 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 28, 2026, to a two-vehicle collision near 190th Street, located approximately five miles north of Lake Poinsett.


According to the preliminary investigation, a northbound pickup truck drifted into the southbound lane, colliding with an oncoming SUV.


Lake Norden Ambulance personnel evaluated both drivers at the scene and confirmed that neither sustained injuries in the crash.

The Hayti Fire Department was the first agency to arrive, providing traffic control and ensuring scene safety. The incident caused minor travel delays, with U.S. Highway 81 reduced to a single lane of traffic for slightly over an hour while emergency crews cleared the area. Both vehicles were successfully removed from the roadway by BES Towing.

The Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office, which led the investigation into the crash, expressed gratitude to the Hayti Fire Department, Lake Norden Ambulance, and BES Towing for their prompt response and assistance in securing the scene.
