Northeast Radio SD News – Arlington, SD - A pickup was destroyed Saturday afternoon after a vehicle fire spread into a nearby field north of Arlington, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies Respond to 2:14 PM Call The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched at 2:14 PM to 19616 US Highway 81, where deputies arrived to find a 2011 Ford F‑350 fully engulfed in flames. The fire had already spread into the surrounding grass.

The truck’s owner, Jim Finnegan of Arlington, told deputies he had just returned from delivering seed to the field and had parked the pickup to begin setting up planting equipment. Moments later, he noticed the truck was on fire and flames were moving into the grass.

The Lake Norden Fire Department responded and extinguished both the vehicle and grass fires. Officials believe the blaze likely originated in the engine compartment, possibly due to an electrical issue.

Damage to the truck is estimated at $30,000, and approximately one‑half acre of grassland burned before crews contained the scene.

Responding agencies included the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and the Lake Norden Fire Department.
