Northeast Radio SD News - Volga, SD - A major fire destroyed a large truck shop in Volga early Sunday morning, November 16, 2025, triggering a multi-agency response from fire departments across Brookings County.
The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office reported that at approximately 5:33 a.m., Brookings 911 Dispatch initially received reports of a possible house fire near the intersection of North Samara Avenue and Highway 14 in Volga. Upon arrival, the Volga Fire Department determined the blaze involved a large truck shop rather than a residence.
The structure, a shop building used by the Vanderwal family for equipment storage and maintenance, was found to be fully involved in fire. Due to the structure's size and intensity, the Volga Fire Department requested mutual aid.
Fire units from Brookings, Bruce, Aurora, White, Elkton, and Sinai all responded to assist the Volga Fire Department, with Brookings Ambulance also on the scene. Crews battled the fire for more than seven hours.
The building contained four semitrucks, a skid steer, and numerous tools and equipment. A formal damage estimate was not available at the time of the release.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office in coordination with the South Dakota Fire Marshal’s Office.
