Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - Travelers flying through Watertown Regional Airport (ATY) are advised to monitor their flight statuses closely, as the airport anticipates potential impacts stemming from nationwide air travel reductions. The reductions are a result of staffing shortages among air traffic controllers and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents, exacerbated by the ongoing government shutdown.

In a public announcement, Watertown Regional Airport informed its "valued guests" that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has requested all airlines to reduce traffic nationwide. The DOT's request comes as the government shutdown reaches 38 days, despite temporary funding that has helped maintain air travel. The traffic reduction request is scheduled to take effect today.

The airport emphasized that this directive applies to all airports, not just Watertown, Sioux Falls, or South Dakota. It affects more than 40 major airports across the country, underscoring the issue's broad scope.

While no schedule changes have been made at Watertown Regional Airport at this time, passengers are strongly encouraged to monitor their flight status closely. The airport notes that potential delays or cancellations could affect both initial departures and connecting flights at destination airports.

Watertown Regional Airport expressed hope that the government shutdown will be resolved soon and that any resulting disruptions for travelers will be minimal. The facility remains committed to providing updates as new information becomes available regarding the situation.
