Watertown Mosquito Spraying Set for Tuesday Night in West-Side Neighborhoods Near Lake Kampeska

Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - The City of Watertown will conduct mosquito spraying Tuesday evening, August 25, after officials determined that adult mosquito counts have reached the threshold requiring treatment in several west‑side neighborhoods.

According to a public service announcement issued August 24, the designated spray zone includes the east side of Lake Kampeska—from Kampeska Lodge to Prairie Winds Golf Club—along with the Derby Downs and Prairie Haven neighborhoods. Weather conditions will determine whether crews are able to begin operations as scheduled after 9 p.m. Tuesday night.

The city notes that while the adulticide used in the Mosquito Control Program is considered safe, residents in the affected areas are encouraged to take basic precautions during and shortly after spraying. The PSA states,

“sensitivity to the adulticide may vary,” 

and recommends staying indoors when possible, keeping children and pets inside for about an hour after spraying, and rinsing homegrown produce before eating or cooking.

Watertown’s mosquito control efforts typically intensify during late summer as weather patterns and standing water increase breeding activity. Residents outside the spray zone are not expected to be affected.
