Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - The Watertown Police Department is celebrating two significant honors awarded to one of its current officers and one former leader by the South Dakota Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Special Olympics. The recognition highlights decades of dedication to supporting Special Olympics athletes across the state.

Captain Steve Rehorst received the Jim Hornby Unsung Hero Award. This award acknowledges his two decades of consistent commitment to Special Olympics, including helping to organize Watertown’s annual Polar Plunges and spearheading numerous fundraisers and events.

Additionally, Retired Assistant Chief Lonnie Greenfield was inducted into the LETR Hall of Fame. This honor recognizes his long-standing efforts in raising both awareness and essential funds for Special Olympics South Dakota.

The awards were presented during a recent ceremony by Doris Hornby, the wife of the late Jim Hornby, and Todd Bradwisch, Vice President of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics South Dakota.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run, established in 1981, is the charity of choice for law enforcement agencies worldwide. It unites officers in promoting inclusion, respect, and financial support for athletes with intellectual disabilities, symbolized by the "Flame of Hope."

Both Rehorst and Greenfield were commended for representing the true spirit of service and the goals of the LETR initiative. Their continued involvement underscores the police department’s commitment to community engagement and support for Special Olympics South Dakota.
