Watertown Police Department Welcomes New Patrol Officer Tony Goebel After Training Graduation

Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - The Watertown Police Department officially introduced its newest addition to the community during the August 3, 2026, City Council meeting. Newly minted Patrol Officer Tony Goebel, who began his service with the department on February 27, 2026, was welcomed by the council and the mayor.
Having recently graduated from his training program, Goebel stepped up to the podium after an introduction from Captain Kirk Ellis to share a bit about his background and what drew him to a career in law enforcement.
A Calling to Help the Community
Goebel explained that he received his law enforcement education at Lake Area Technical College, but the desire to wear the badge started long before that.
“Just kind of always had that thought in the back of my head, just even as a kid growing up, thought it’d be an interesting career path,” Goebel told the council. “I like helping people, so it seemed pretty fitting.”
Growing up on a family farm “out in the middle of nowhere,” Goebel joked about the transition to his new patrol area. “I was telling people, you know, Watertown is big city living for me,” he said.
Lighthearted Banter with the Council
The introduction was filled with good humor, as Goebel proved he already fits in well with the department and city leadership. Referencing an earlier joke by Councilman Dan Schutte regarding the gray hair of veteran officers, Goebel proudly pointed out that he is starting to get a few silver strands himself.
“I fit right in with them,” Goebel laughed. “If it all stays and turns gray, I’ll be happy with that, as long as it don't fall out.”
Mayor Ried Holien was quick to join in on the fun, noting that the new officer looks “extremely young” and jokingly asking if Goebel would be able to pass a compliance check in town.
“I would think so,” Goebel replied with a smile. “I have to pull out my ID, but...”
“The Best in the Nation”
Concluding the introduction on a high note, Mayor Holien expressed the city’s gratitude for Goebel’s decision to serve and protect Watertown.
“We’re very happy to have you. Thank you so much for joining the crew here at the Watertown Police Department,” Holien said. “I know Chief Toomey says it’s the best in the nation. I definitely put it up against the best in the nation. So thank you for joining us and making us stronger, and you’ve made a great first impression.”
