Watertown Regional Library to Host Lakota Hoop Dancer Starr Chief Eagle

Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - The Watertown Regional Library will host a series of free programs with acclaimed hoop dancer Starr Chief Eagle on Monday, October 6, and Tuesday, October 7. The events, which are open to the public, will focus on Lakota culture, language, and art.


Starr Chief Eagle is an enrolled member of the Sicangu (Rosebud) Lakota Sioux Tribe and has been hoop dancing for over 29 years. She was awarded the Educator of the Year Award from Crazy Horse Memorial.


The two-day event includes a variety of presentations and workshops:


Monday, October 6

·        4:00 p.m.: Miniature Hoop Making Class (registration required, ages 10+)

·        5:30 p.m.: Lakota Language Class (ages 10+)


Tuesday, October 7

·        4:00 p.m.: Necklace Making Workshop (all ages)

·        5:30 p.m.: Powwow Dances Presentation (all ages)

·        7:00 p.m.: Hoop Dance Performance (all ages)


The Watertown Area Community Foundation, the South Dakota Arts Council, and the Friends of the Watertown Regional Library sponsor the events.
