Watertown’s Adelia “Dea” Thorn Named 2026 South Dakota Centenarian of the Year at Age 108
Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - The South Dakota Health Care Association’s Century ClubSM, in partnership with KELOLAND Media Group, has named Adelia “Dea” Thorn as the 2026 South Dakota Centenarian of the Year. Thorn, who is 108 years old, is the oldest current member of the Century ClubSM.
Born in January 1918 in Faulkton to Clark and Maud Thorn, Dea grew up in a bustling home with six siblings: Winnie Chase, Norma Sievers, Fay Thorn, Coralea Richmond, Bert Thorn, and Earl Thorn. She graduated from Henry High School in 1936.
In 1942, Dea moved to Minneapolis and began what would become a 39‑year career at Woolworth’s, remembered for her dedication and work ethic. She returned to Watertown in 2002 and now resides at Jenkins Living Center. Known for her humor and independence, she often joked that her longevity may be due to never marrying.
Family remains central in Dea’s life. She is cherished by her goddaughter and power of attorney, Paulette Hanlon, Paulette’s husband Mike, and 14 nieces and nephews.
Throughout her life, Dea embraced many interests. She was an avid reader and a passionate bowler, spending winters on the lanes with her sister Fay. The pair were known for both their enthusiasm and skill. Together, they traveled widely, visiting family and friends across numerous states and cities.
About the Century ClubSM
The South Dakota Health Care Association established the Century ClubSM in 1997 to honor residents aged 100 or older for their longevity and contributions to the state. Nearly 1,500 South Dakotans have been inducted.
Membership is open to any South Dakota resident upon reaching their 100th birthday. There are no dues, and inductees receive a certificate and membership card. Each year, the oldest living member is recognized as the Centenarian of the Year.
