Watertown Seeks State Funding for Lake Kampeska Bridge Replacement Study

Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - A resolution authorizing the City of Watertown to apply for state bridge improvement funding will appear on Monday night’s City Council consent agenda, advancing early‑stage work on a deteriorating bridge near Lake Kampeska.


Resolution No. 26‑27 seeks approval to submit a Bridge Improvement Grant (BIG) Preliminary Engineering application for Structure 15‑141‑139, located on North Lake Drive just east of 450th Avenue near Lake Kampeska Lodge. The structure, built in 1931, currently carries an overall condition rating of 4, according to the city’s NBIS inspection map.


What the Grant Covers

The application requests funding for survey and hydraulics work, the first step in evaluating replacement options for the aging bridge. If awarded, the South Dakota Department of Transportation would enter into a grant agreement with the city.


The total project cost for the preliminary engineering phase is $49,635.78, with the city responsible for a 20% local match of $9,927.16. The remaining $39,708.62 would come from the BIG program. The city plans to budget its share in the 2027 budget.


Once the survey and hydraulics study are complete, the city would submit a separate grant application for design and construction of the replacement structure.


The resolution will be part of the July 20, 2026 City Council meeting’s consent agenda.
