Watertown Two-Vehicle Crash at 9th Ave SW Railroad Crossing Causes Minor Injuries, Traffic Delay

Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - The Watertown Police Department and Watertown Fire Rescue responded to a two-vehicle collision at the railroad crossing on 9th Ave SW near Fish Road on Tuesday afternoon.

The crash occurred at approximately 1:49 p.m. on August 11, 2026. A 2025 white GMC Yukon, driven by a 60-year-old Watertown woman, was traveling eastbound on 9th Ave SW. The driver stopped at the crossing as warning lights and arms activated for a train approaching from the south.

While stopped, the Yukon was struck from behind by a silver 2006 Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 57-year-old Watertown man.

Watertown Fire Rescue personnel evaluated the occupants of both vehicles at the scene for minor injuries. All individuals declined ambulance transport to the hospital.

Citations and Vehicle Damage

Authorities cited the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado for following too closely and for no child restraint seat for a child under age five.

Both vehicles sustained disabling damage and were towed from the scene. The GMC Yukon sustained an estimated $6,000 in damage, while the Chevrolet Silverado is considered a total loss. Sharp Automotive towed the Yukon, and Active Towing removed the Silverado.

Traffic in the area was disrupted for approximately 30 minutes while first responders cleared the scene.
