Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - The Codington County Youth Diversion Program reported an 87% success rate this fiscal year. Director Louis Canfield told commissioners that 266 of 386 referred youth have completed their diversion plans, which address issues ranging from substance use to property damage. The program connects youth with screenings, mental health evaluations, and educational courses.
The state provides $750 for each successful completion, generating savings and incentives for the county. Commissioners also approved a $19,000 DOC/R/ED grant to support cultural programming for Native American youth, who make up about 20% of the program’s participants. Activities include monthly Native American Clubs and talking circles aimed at reducing re‑offense rates.
