Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - Highway Superintendent Randy Falvey announced at Tuesday’s meeting that 175th Street—the city haul road for the landfill—EAST from the entrance of the landfill, will be closed to all traffic starting Wednesday, March 18.
The closure is located just west of County Road 9-4 (458th Avenue) and is necessary for critical repairs to the bridge structure. Holloway Construction, a specialized firm out of Mitchell, has been contracted to perform a delicate “deck-lifting” operation.
Repair Scope and Impact:
· Nature of Work: Crews will lift the bridge deck to allow for the replacement of a deteriorating wing wall on the east side of the structure.
· Timeline: The project is expected to be fast-tracked, with a projected duration of five days. Falvey told commissioners he anticipates the road will be fully reopened by Monday, March 23, weather permitting.
· Access Info: Access to the landfill remains open via Highway 81. The city and county have coordinated to ensure that garbage hauling and commercial waste disposal will continue with minimal disruption via the alternate route.
The repair is part of a broader county effort to maintain load capacities on essential “heavy haul” routes. “We want to get in and out quickly to minimize the detour for the city’s sanitation trucks,” Falvey noted.
