Northeast Radio SD News - Elkton, SD - The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a hit-and-run collision that occurred near Elkton on Sunday, October 26, 2025, resulting in injuries.

The incident took place at approximately 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of 216th Street and 484th Avenue.

According to the Sheriff's Office, James Smallfield, 82, of Elkton, was traveling west on 216th Street in his Kubota side-by-side UTV when it collided with a second, currently unknown, vehicle traveling south on 484th Avenue.

Investigators at the scene observed tire tracks on the gravel road, indicating the southbound vehicle had braked just before entering the intersection. Following the impact, the unknown vehicle fled the area. Mr. Smallfield's UTV came to rest just east of the intersection.

Smallfield contacted a family member, who arrived at the scene and transported him to a Sioux Falls hospital. He was treated for a laceration on his head and has since been released.

Evidence collected at the scene provides some details about the suspect vehicle. Paint transfer found on the UTV indicates the car is red. Additionally, the recovered vehicle parts have been referenced to a 1980s-era GMC truck. Investigators believe the suspect vehicle sustained damage to its driver’s side front. A damage estimate for the Kubota UTV was not available at the time of this report.

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate this incident and is seeking public assistance.
