Brookings Driver Suffers Life-Threatening Injuries in Late-Night Highway 14 Collision

Northeast Radio SD News – Brookings County, SD - A two-vehicle collision late Friday night near Brookings has left one driver with serious, life-threatening injuries and hospitalized several others.


The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and emergency personnel were dispatched to the intersection of SD Highway 14 and 466th Avenue at approximately 11:43 p.m. on October 17.


According to the Sheriff's Office investigation, a 1993 Buick Electra, driven by Delane Moe, 69, of Brookings, was traveling southbound on 466th Avenue. After stopping at the intersection with Highway 14, Moe reportedly continued onto the highway into the path of a westbound 1995 Ford Centauro, driven by Ava Vande Weerd, 20, of Bruce.


Following the collision, emergency personnel had to extricate Moe from the vehicle. Moe was transported by ambulance to Brookings Hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries and was later transferred to Sioux Falls via Careflight Ambulance.


The Vande Weerd vehicle contained seven occupants, including the driver. The driver and the front seat passenger were taken to Brookings Hospital for further evaluation. The conditions of all injured individuals were unavailable at the time of the report.


Agencies that responded to the scene included the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Volga Fire Department, Brookings Ambulance, and Arlington Ambulance.


The incident remains under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
