Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley announced that a Buffalo, South Dakota man, 55-year-old Duane Newlander, has been sentenced to 10 years in state prison after pleading guilty to two counts of Abuse or Cruelty to a Minor.

The sentencing took place in August in Butte County Circuit Court. The charges stem from separate cases of abuse that occurred across two counties: Butte and Harding. Newlander received a 10-year sentence for each count, with the sentences to be served concurrently.

“These are heinous crimes that targeted children, and we always will vigorously prosecute these offenses,” said Attorney General Marty Jackley. “I’m thankful for investigators and prosecutors who worked tirelessly to bring justice to these victims.”

The criminal acts in Butte County occurred between 2019 and 2021, and the crimes in Harding County took place between 2016 and 2020.

The crimes were investigated by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, in conjunction with the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, the Harding County Sheriff’s Office, and the Belle Fourche Police Department.

The cases were prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office, working in cooperation with the Butte County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Harding County State’s Attorney’s Office.
