Candidate Filing Window Narrows for Codington County Commission Races

Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - With the 2026 primary election season approaching, the field for the Codington County Board of Commissioners is beginning to take shape. Codington County Auditor Brenda Hanten confirmed this week that petitions are being filed for the three commission seats up for election this year: Districts 1, 3, and 5.
As of mid-March, several candidates have officially entered the race, though some incumbents have yet to formalize their bids for re-election.
District 1: A New Challenger
In District 1, which is currently represented by Commissioner Lee Gabel, a new candidate has officially entered the fray. Chris Hupke has submitted his nominating petition to the Auditor’s office. As of this report, Gabel has not yet filed a petition to retain his seat.
District 3: Incumbent Seeks Re-election
District 3 incumbent Myron Johnson was among the first to formalize his candidacy. Johnson has already submitted his petition to the Auditor, signaling his intent to seek another four-year term on the board.
District 5: Schweer Files for Second Term
In District 5, incumbent Randall “Randy” Schweer filed his nominating petition on Wednesday morning. Schweer, who was first elected to the board in 2022, is officially seeking a second term representing the district.
Key Deadlines Approaching
Auditor Hanten reminds prospective candidates that the clock is ticking to get on the June primary ballot.
· March 31, 2026: The deadline for party candidates to file nominating petitions with the County Auditor. Petitions must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. local time or sent via registered mail by this date.
· April 28, 2026: The deadline for independent candidates to file.
· June 2, 2026: Primary Election Day.
