Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - In a move designed to alleviate local flooding issues, the Council will vote on vacating approximately 14,430 square feet of unimproved public right-of-way located near 19th Street SW. The petition was filed by adjacent property owners Jeffrey and Sandra Stadheim.
The 30-foot-wide strip of land sits between an abandoned railroad right-of-way and Lot 5 Block 3 of the Watertown Development Company Addition. Currently containing no public utilities and having been disconnected from 21st Street W by a previous vacation in 2019, the land is effectively unusable for a public street.
Vacating the property will allow the Stadheims to work with neighboring property owners to construct a private detention pond across the former right-of-way, an improvement expected to alleviate ongoing drainage problems in the area.
The Planning Commission recommended approval unanimously (7-0) on June 4, 2026, and the vacation does not create any landlocked property.
