Codington County 4-H Updates Commissioners on Youth Events, Achievement Days, and 2027 Extension Budget

Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - Codington County 4‑H Educator Jodi Loehrer delivered a full slate of updates Tuesday as the Board of Commissioners reviewed monthly reports during their July 7 meeting.

Jodi began by noting the success of the annual 4‑H Chuckwagon, calling the event “a great hit” and thanking supporters. Codington County 4‑H youth recently joined participants from Clark, Day, and Marshall counties for a multi‑county horse show in Webster, where 29 youth competed.

Next week, July 13–15, several local youth will travel to Huron for the State 4‑H Horse Show. Seven Codington County participants are also preparing to compete in the Daisy National Shoot in Rogers, Arkansas, July 10–13.

Closer to home, the County 4‑H Special Foods Contest will be held Thursday, July 9, with 12 youth participating — ten of them boys, a trend Jody said she was excited to see. Additional upcoming events include radio public service announcements on KWAT scheduled for July 21 and a food preservation workshop on July 22.

The county’s Achievement Days are set for August 3–6, and preparations are underway.

Jodi also presented the Extension Office’s proposed 2027 budget, outlining several anticipated increases:

·         3% cost‑of‑living adjustment for wages

·         10% increase in health insurance

·         5% increase in dental insurance

·         Higher publishing costs due to annual software subscription requirements

·         Increased utilities tied to a new firewall system installed at the Extension Office

·         Additional equipment expenses, including computer replacements

Commissioners said the budget looked appropriate and noted that all other line items remained unchanged.
