Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - The Codington County Board of Commissioners officially approved three local plat resolutions during its weekly meeting on May 26, 2026, facilitating residential developments across Kranzburg and Henry Townships. While the zoning approvals were ultimately unanimous, the process highlighted the importance of board oversight when commissioners caught an administrative error on the final resolution of the morning.

Zoning Officer Luke Muller submitted the documentation for the three plats, which were subsequently presented and read into the record by Commissioner Myron Johnson.

The board first addressed Resolution 2026-10, which approved the platting of the Appelhof Addition. The property is located in the Northeast Quarter of Section 13, Township 116 North, Range 51 West of the 5th P.M. within Kranzburg (S) Township. Following a recommendation for approval from the County Planning Commission, the plat was adopted via a motion by Commissioner Johnson, seconded by Tyler McElhany.

The second item, Resolution 2026-11, cleared the way for the F and S Strohfus Addition. Located in the Southwest Quarter of Section 10, Township 116 North, Range 55 West of the 5th P.M. in Henry Township, the plat qualifies as an existing farmstead exemption. The resolution was adopted smoothly following a motion by Johnson and a second by Randall Schweer.

The final item on the zoning agenda, Resolution 2026-12, initially hit a snag during its formal reading. The resolution was meant to approve the Spurrell Addition, a 5-acre plat located in the Southeast Quarter of Section 34, Township 117 North, Range 53 West of the 5th P.M. in Henry Township, intended for an updated modular home development.

However, as Commissioner Johnson read through the legal text, he realized the paperwork mistakenly repeated the name of the previous “Strohfus” development instead of “Spurrell.”

What’s that? This is the Spurrell Addition, yeah... It should say Spurrell," Commissioner Johnson remarked, pausing the reading. “Yeah, okay... I’m glad I’m reading this, so we caught that.”

Commissioner Gabel chimed in to confirm the exact nature of the clerical error: “Just need to correct that one typo... It’s just the word Strohfus needs to be replaced by Spurrell, correct? That’s it.”

County Auditor Brenda Hanten confirmed the error and assured the board that the administrative correction would be made immediately. With the verbal amendment noted, the board proceeded to adopt the corrected Spurrell Addition plat, moved by Johnson and seconded by McElhany.
