Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - The Watertown City Council unanimously approved a $140,357 bid from Berg Enterprise LLC to construct a new truss‑style hoop building at the city landfill. The structure will provide dedicated storage for the city’s composter and other equipment currently occupying limited shop space. City Engineer Justin Petersen told the council that the project drew five bids, with Berg Enterprise submitting the lowest bid. “The intent is to store the composter and some trash cans and various other equipment,” Petersen said. “The low bid came in a little over $140,000, which is under budget, and we recommend approval.” Councilman Brent Mohrmann asked for clarification on the building’s purpose. City Manager Alan Stager explained that the composter is a large, essential piece of equipment used to turn over compost piles. “It takes up a lot of space in our current shop area,” Stager said. “This allows us to better utilize our space.” Councilman Michael Heuer asked about the lifespan of the building’s fabric covering. “What’s the typical lifespan on the outer fabric of that?” he asked. Petersen estimated 20 to 25 years, and Stager added that the city already operates a similar structure in the street department. “We may need to replace the fabric every couple of decades, but the structure does have a life cycle similar to a standard building,” Stager said. The council approved the bid unanimously.
