DCI Investigating First Officer-Involved Shooting of 2026 in Box Elder

Northeast Radio SD News – Box Elder, SD - The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has launched an inquiry into an officer-involved shooting that took place on Saturday, March 21, in Box Elder. The incident, which involved the South Dakota Highway Patrol, marks the first such shooting in the state this year.


The situation began Saturday when the Meade County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a vehicle, leading to a pursuit. The South Dakota Highway Patrol eventually located the vehicle in Box Elder.


Following a brief secondary pursuit, the vehicle was stopped. During the encounter, state troopers discharged their weapons at the suspect.


·         Suspect Status: The suspect sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is currently receiving medical attention. Their identity has not yet been released.

·         Safety Check: No law enforcement officers or bystanders were injured during the exchange.

·         Public Risk: Attorney General Marty Jackley confirmed there is no continuing danger to the public.


The Investigation Process

At the request of the Highway Patrol, the DCI is now leading the formal investigation. Attorney General Jackley emphasized the office's commitment to a "complete and unbiased" review of the facts.


“The Attorney General’s Office and DCI approach every officer-involved shooting with the utmost seriousness,” said Jackley. “We will release our findings once our work is finished.”


Investigators are currently processing the crime scene, conducting forensic examinations of evidence, and reviewing all available video footage. The DCI is receiving assistance from several local agencies, including the Box Elder Police Department, the Rapid City Police Department, and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office.


A full summary of the shooting will be issued by the DCI once the investigation is finalized.
